The History of Adegas Camillo Alves, S.A. dates back to the nineteenth century, to the year 1881 when João Camillo Alves initiated his business in the wine trade. He first started to sell wines produced in the famous wine region of Bucelas, an excellent area for producing white wine highly appreciated not only in Portugal but also worldwide. In 1921, the descendents of João Camillo Alves joined the company and expanded the business, making the company into one of the most important in the market.

Already in the 50's João Camillo Alves, Ltd. aiming at developing the business, acquires another wine company, named Caves Velhas - Companhia Portuguesa de Vinhos de Marca, Ltd.. And it was under this umbrella name that quality wines coming from Appellation of Origin regions were offered to the market, which happens

until today. In the year of 1971 and due to some structural problems, Sociedade Central de Cervejas becomes the biggest shareholder of the company, changing the name into Adegas Camillo Alves, S.A.R.L.. Since then and until a few months ago, Adegas Camillo Alves were associated to Central de Cervejas sharing the difficulties of the years.

The company went through the Revolution of April 1974, and then survived to a process of nationalization, to be again privatised in the nineties. In 2000, the former owners acquired it to re-sell it in 2001, to the present owner, a very important wine merchant already established in the business. Adegas Camillo Alves, S.A. have always had

strong ties to Bucelas: traces in the village architecture, local source of employment, and responsible for developing the local economy and promoting the region worldwide.

The company proud of their background started the XXI century decided to maintain the strong relation to Bucelas, promoting the economical development by producing excellent wines which honors not only Adegas Camillo Alves / Caves Velhas but also the region of Bucelas.
